Natural Stone Patios in Kildare

Natural stone remains the premium choice for Kildare patios where the property calls for warmth, character and a genuine organic finish rather than the precision uniformity of porcelain. Granite, limestone and sandstone flags, quarried, sawn, split and finished by hand, bring variation in tone, texture and veining that machine-produced tiles cannot replicate. On period cottages around Kildare Town and Athy, on stone-walled country houses in Clane and Ballymore Eustace, on traditional farmhouses across the rural stretches of the county, natural stone reads as right in a way nothing else does.

We work with three main natural stone families across Kildare. Granite, Irish-quarried where available, imported Chinese or Indian granite for specific colour matches, in finishes ranging from rough-split through flamed to honed. Limestone, warm cream and grey tones, riven or honed, sourced from Irish and European quarries. Sandstone, honey-gold, buff, grey-blue, often with distinctive veining and riven finishes. Each stone has its own weight, its own care requirements and its own architectural fit. We bring real samples to every site survey so you can see the genuine colour variation in daylight rather than committing off a catalogue.

Natural stone patio installation is the most exacting of all our hardscape work. Stone flags vary slightly in thickness and dimension batch-to-batch, so every slab is individually bedded to true level rather than laid on a uniform bed. We use full sand-and-cement bedding, never dot-and-dab, laid to laser-levelled falls. Joints are hand-pointed with a lime-rich mortar (or the appropriate jointing compound for the stone type) in a colour matched to the stone to blend naturally. Cuts at the edges are made with a wet diamond saw for clean-edge finish, not chipped roughly on site.

Across Kildare our natural stone work runs the full range. Full rear garden patios for family use on modern and period properties in Naas, Newbridge, Maynooth and Celbridge. Mature garden renovations on larger plots in Clane, Straffan, Prosperous and Johnstown where stone patios tie into existing landscaping, established trees and stone boundary walls. Period house renovations in Kildare Town, Athy and Castledermot where the patio has to sit correctly alongside original stonework, granite quoining and traditional hardscape. Full hardscape projects on larger estates where the patio is part of a wider build with stone retaining walls, granite steps, entrance features and terraced garden rooms.

Natural stone does require more care than porcelain over its lifetime, it is a more porous material and benefits from sealing every 2-3 years to protect against staining, and from proper joint maintenance to keep it weather-tight. We provide full care guidance at handover and can return for scheduled re-seals and joint refresh visits. In exchange you get a patio with a depth of character that only real stone delivers, a finish that improves with age, weathers beautifully, and reads as part of the landscape rather than applied to it.

Why Choose Us

Why Kildare Homeowners Choose Delaney Natural Stone

Every Stone Family, Real Samples

Granite, limestone, sandstone, Irish-quarried where available, plus quality imported ranges for specific colour matches. Real physical samples brought to every site survey so you see the colour variation, texture and finish in daylight against your house rather than from a catalogue photograph.

Full Bedding, Hand-Pointed Joints

Every stone flag laid on full sand-and-cement bedding (never dot-and-dab), individually bedded to true level to accommodate natural thickness variation. Joints hand-pointed with matched-colour mortar for weather tightness and visual integration. This is the spec that separates a 50-year stone patio from one that fails in 5.

Period Property Specialists

We have been building natural stone patios on Kildare period properties for four decades. We understand how new stonework has to sit alongside original granite quoining, traditional boundary walls, established planting and mature landscaping. The finished patio should look like it was always there.

Full Hardscape, Integrated Build

Stone retaining walls, granite steps, seating walls, planter walls, entrance features, pergola bases, all delivered in-house alongside the main patio. Full rear garden hardscape as one coherent project rather than a series of disconnected elements added later.

Our Process

How We Build Your Natural Stone Patio

01

Free Site Survey & Stone Selection

We visit your Kildare property, measure the garden, check levels and drainage, and discuss stone type, finish and layout. Physical samples from every stone family brought to site so you see the real variation in daylight. Detailed written quote within 48 hours, no obligation.

02

Design Lock & Material Order

Once stone selection is finalised we lock the full spec, flag sizes, layout pattern, joint colour, edging detail, any integrated features. Natural stone is ordered batch-matched for colour consistency and delivered in quantity sufficient to complete the full build in one go.

03

Excavation, Sub-Base & Drainage

Strip the existing surface or lawn, excavate to 200-250mm (deeper on soft or wet Kildare ground, natural stone is heavier than porcelain and needs a more substantial base), dispose of all spoil, and lay compacted crushed stone hardcore in layers. Linear channel drainage installed where the patio meets the house.

04

Full Bedding & Individual Flag Laying

Full sand-and-cement bedding laid over the sub-base, laser-levelled to true plane with correct falls for drainage. Each stone flag individually bedded to accommodate natural thickness variation, joint widths maintained precisely, edge cuts made with a wet diamond saw for clean finish.

05

Hand-Pointing, Sealing & Handover

Joints hand-pointed with the appropriate mortar compound in a matched colour. First sealant coat applied once the patio has cured (typically 7-10 days after laying). Full wash-down and waste removal. Care guidance provided at handover, recommended re-seal schedule, joint maintenance, long-term care.
