Community grounds

Scheduled
with the school.

A school yard takes daily foot traffic, bins and delivery vans, and it has to drain well. Delaney builds it the same way as any surface it lays: a sub-base matched to the ground, then a binder course and an SMA wearing course, machine-laid and rolled to fall to the gullies.

Buying the work

Quotes and tenders

Smaller jobs are usually bought on quotes. Larger school and public jobs are often tendered to an engineer's or architect's specification.

  • A written quote for the board of management or parish council.
  • Pricing to a specification or bill of quantities where one is issued.
  • A site visit before pricing either way.

Safety

A closed site

Where any part of the grounds stays open, the work area is fenced off from it.

  • Work area fenced and signed.
  • Separate pedestrian route kept open where needed.
  • Site swept and checked before it reopens.

Residential jobs, laid by the same crew with the same machine-laid method, sub-base and kerbing.

"The base is everything. If the sub-base is wrong, the whole thing fails inside three years."

Common Questions

Common questions.

Can you price to an engineer's specification?+

Yes. Where a school or parish issues a specification or tender, Delaney prices to it after a site visit.

Is tarmac suitable for a school play area?+

Tarmac is the usual surface for school yards, laid to fall so the yard drains after rain. Soft play surfaces are specialist work and not part of this service.
