Block Paved Driveways in Kildare

Block paving is the premium kerb-appeal driveway finish in Kildare. Where tarmac gives you clean and practical, block paving gives you colour choice, pattern, feature borders, decorative banding and the ability to genuinely complement the house rather than just surface the drive. Our suppliers, Kilsaran and Tobermore, both produce Irish-manufactured blocks in colour ranges designed for Irish weather and Irish architectural styles, from warm sandstone tones that pick up red-brick period facades through to cool contemporary greys for modern builds.

A block paved driveway lives or dies on two things: the sub-base underneath and the laying precision on top. Our Kildare block paving builds start with a 200mm compacted hardcore sub-base (deeper on wet or soft sites), a 50mm sharp sand screed bed laid true to grade, and blocks hand-laid to pattern, herringbone, stretcher bond, basket weave or bespoke layouts, with a proper edge restraint course concreted in. Jointing is done with kiln-dried sand compacted in with a plate compactor. The result is a tight, stable, long-lasting driveway that still runs true in year 25.

Across Kildare we work on every kind of block paving project. Mid-range family home drives in Naas, Newbridge and Maynooth get standard 60mm rectangular blocks in a herringbone pattern with a concrete kerb edge, the sweet spot for durability, looks and cost. Premium builds on larger Kildare properties (Carbury, Clane, Johnstown, Robertstown) get feature borders in a contrasting tone, colour banding to break up larger areas, and sometimes granite sett inlays at the entrance. Period properties around Kildare Town and Athy suit warmer, riven-effect blocks in stone tones that sit naturally against original brickwork.

Block paving also meets the Kildare County Council planning requirement for permeable surfaces where paved areas exceed 5 square metres. We use permeable block paving systems with a proper graded sub-base when the council requires SuDS-compliant drainage. This matters particularly on front garden driveway conversions, where the permeable spec replaces the need for a separate soakaway and keeps the installation clean and compliant from the start.

Why Choose Us

Why Kildare Homeowners Choose Delaney Block Paving

Premium Irish Suppliers

Kilsaran and Tobermore are both Irish-manufactured premium block paving ranges with colour and finish options designed for Irish weather. We work directly with both and pass trade pricing on to you. Cheap imported blocks are a false economy, they fade, they crack in frost cycles and they look tired within 5 years.

Precision Pattern-Laying

Block paving pattern laying is a genuine craft. Herringbone, stretcher bond, basket weave and combined-pattern designs all have their own technique. Our crews have been laying block paving in Kildare for decades, the joints line up, the cuts at the edges are clean, and the border courses frame the main area properly.

Feature Borders & Colour Banding

A contrasting-tone border around the edge of a block paving driveway costs relatively little extra and transforms the visual weight of the finish. We design the border and banding as part of every Kildare block paving quote, with sample boards at the site survey so you see exactly how your choice sits against the house.

SuDS-Compliant Permeable Options

For front garden conversions over 5 square metres Kildare County Council requires permeable surfacing or a soakaway. Permeable block paving is the cleanest way to meet this without adding separate drainage engineering. We spec the right system for your plot at the survey stage.

Our Process

How We Build Your Block Paving Driveway

01

Free Site Survey & Design

We visit your Kildare property, measure the area, check the ground and discuss pattern, colour and border options. You get samples to see against your house and a detailed written quote within 48 hours.

02

Excavation & Sub-Base

Strip the existing surface, excavate to 200mm minimum (deeper on soft or wet sites), dispose of all spoil, and lay compacted crushed stone hardcore in layers. SuDS-compliant graded sub-base used where permeable paving is required.

03

Edge Restraint

Install the concrete-haunched edge restraint course around the perimeter before any blocks are laid. The restraint is what holds the whole paved area together long-term, without it the blocks spread and work loose within a few years.

04

Screed & Block Laying

Lay a 50mm sharp sand screed bed true to grade. Hand-lay blocks in your chosen pattern with the border/feature banding locked in. Cut edge blocks cleanly to finish tight against walls, kerbs or driveway gates.

05

Jointing, Compaction & Handover

Brush kiln-dried jointing sand into every joint and compact with a plate compactor in passes until the blocks lock together as a monolithic surface. Final sweep-down, waste removed, care guidance provided.
