Expert Block Paving Installation in Dublin

Block paving has become the surface of choice for Dublin homeowners who want their driveway to make an impression. Walk through any established estate in Castleknock, Malahide, or Stillorgan and you will see herringbone-patterned block driveways that still look as sharp as the day they were laid. The reason is simple: quality block paving, properly installed on a correct sub-base, is one of the most durable and attractive driveway surfaces available, and it suits the character of Dublin housing perfectly.

At Delaney Tarmac & Paving, we have been laying block-paved driveways across Dublin for over four decades. We work with premium blocks from Tobermore and Kilsaran, two of Ireland's most trusted manufacturers, offering everything from classic charcoal and brindle to contemporary silver-grey and sandstone tones. Our team will help you choose the right block style, colour blend, and laying pattern to complement your home, whether that is a traditional herringbone for a period red-brick in Rathfarnham or a sleek stretcher bond for a modern build in Adamstown.

Dublin's climate presents specific challenges for block paving that only experienced installers understand. The freeze-thaw cycles common between November and March can lift poorly bedded blocks within a couple of winters. Our installation method guards against this: we excavate to a full 250mm minimum, lay compacted sub-base in layers, use a sharp sand bedding course screeded to precise levels, and vibrate the finished blocks into the sand with a plate compactor. The jointing sand is then swept in multiple passes to lock everything together. This approach means our block driveways in Dublin stay flat, firm, and weed-resistant for years.

For Dublin properties where surface water management is a concern, particularly in newer housing developments subject to planning conditions, we also install permeable block paving systems. These use blocks with widened joints or built-in channels that allow rainwater to drain through into a specially prepared aggregate reservoir beneath, reducing runoff and helping you meet Sustainable Urban Drainage (SuDS) requirements without needing separate soakaways or attenuation tanks.

Why Choose Us

Why Delaney for Block Paving in Dublin

Pattern Expertise

Herringbone, basket weave, stretcher bond, circular features, we lay them all to a meticulous standard. Herringbone at 45 degrees is our most popular Dublin driveway pattern because it interlocks under vehicle loads without shifting, but we are equally at home creating bespoke designs with contrasting border courses, fan patterns around features, and curved edging that follows the line of your garden beds.

Quality Tobermore & Kilsaran Blocks

We source our blocks exclusively from Tobermore and Kilsaran, both of which manufacture to IS EN 1338 standards right here in Ireland. Their blocks are freeze-thaw rated for Irish conditions, colour-fast against UV, and available in an enormous range of finishes, from tumbled rustic to smooth contemporary. We never use cheap imported blocks that fade or flake after a few winters.

Full Drainage Solutions

Every Dublin block paving project we undertake includes a drainage plan tailored to your property. We install channel drains, ACO drains, and permeable paving systems as needed to manage surface water properly. In areas with heavy clay subsoil, widespread across Tallaght, Firhouse, and the south Dublin suburbs, we incorporate land drains into the sub-base layer to prevent water sitting beneath the blocks.

Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee

We stand behind every block paving driveway we lay in Dublin with a written workmanship guarantee. If blocks sink, shift, or become uneven due to our installation, not external factors like tree root growth or utility works, we will return and put it right at no cost. Our reputation in Dublin is built on standing behind our work, and our 5-star Google reviews reflect that commitment.

Our Process

How We Install Block Paving

01

Design Consultation

We visit your Dublin home to measure up, discuss your preferences, and recommend block types, colours, and patterns that suit your property. We bring physical block samples so you can see and feel the options in your own daylight, screen colours never tell the full story. We also assess existing drainage, ground levels, and the condition of your boundary walls or kerbing to identify any preparatory work needed.

02

Excavation & Drainage

Our crew excavates the full driveway area to a depth of 250mm to 300mm, removing the old surface and any unsuitable material beneath. All spoil is removed from site. We install edge restraints, either concrete haunching or proprietary aluminium edging, to define the paving boundaries. Drainage is addressed at this stage: channel drains are set to level, connections to storm water are made, and land drains are laid if the subsoil is heavy clay, as it is across much of Dublin.

03

Sub-Base Preparation

We lay and compact a minimum 150mm of Type 1 crushed stone sub-base in layers, using a vibrating plate compactor or roller to achieve the density needed to support vehicle traffic without settlement. The sub-base is graded to establish the correct falls for drainage, typically towards the road or a channel drain. In areas prone to waterlogging, such as properties near the Dodder or Tolka river valleys, we increase the sub-base depth and incorporate a geotextile separation membrane.

04

Block Laying & Cutting

A 50mm layer of sharp grit sand is screeded to a uniform depth over the sub-base. Our pavers then lay the blocks by hand in your chosen pattern, working methodically from one corner to maintain straight lines and consistent joint widths. All cuts around manholes, edges, and curves are made with a diamond-blade block splitter for clean, precise fits. We take particular care at the transitions between driveway and footpath, a common weak point if poorly executed.

05

Jointing & Compaction

Once the blocks are laid, we make multiple passes with a plate compactor fitted with a protective mat to vibrate the blocks into the sand bed and level the surface. Kiln-dried jointing sand is swept into all joints and compacted again, locking the blocks into a rigid, interlocking surface. The result is a driveway that feels solid underfoot, drains cleanly, and resists weed growth. We finish by cleaning down the entire surface and tidying the site so you can enjoy your new driveway immediately.
