Excavation & Drainage
We excavate the full patio area to a minimum depth of 200mm, stripping topsoil, old surfaces, and root systems. Dublin's predominantly clay subsoil requires particular attention at this stage, we install a geotextile membrane to prevent clay heave into the sub-base and set drainage falls using laser levels. Natural stone varies in thickness by several millimetres per slab, unlike porcelain, so the mortar bed must be adjusted constantly to achieve a flat, even surface. This is where decades of experience show. We lay to consistent joint widths of 10–15mm for traditional patterns or 5–8mm for contemporary formats, maintaining the falls set during drainage preparation.
Pointing & Sealing
After the mortar bed has cured for a minimum of 24 hours, we point all joints with a flexible exterior pointing compound, either a brush-in resin-based product for narrow joints or a traditional trowel-pointed mortar for wider gaps. Once pointing has set, we thoroughly clean the stone surface and apply the appropriate impregnating sealer. The patio is then left to cure for a further 24 hours before use. A final walkthrough with the client ensures every detail meets the Delaney standard.
