Specialist Patio Contractors Serving All of Dublin.
Finding the right patio contractor in Dublin can feel overwhelming. There are plenty of general builders willing to lay a few slabs, but a patio is a significant investment in your home, and the difference between a professionally installed surface and a rushed job becomes painfully obvious within the first Irish winter. At Delaney Tarmac and Paving, patios are a core speciality, not a sideline. Paul Delaney has been designing and building patios across Dublin for over 45 years, working with homeowners from Rathfarnham to Swords to create outdoor spaces that genuinely transform how families use their gardens. Every patio we install is engineered from the ground up, with proper excavation, drainage solutions tailored to Dublin's clay-heavy subsoil, and materials sourced from trusted European suppliers.
The range of patio options available to Dublin homeowners today is broader than ever. Porcelain paving has surged in popularity thanks to its frost-proof performance and near-zero maintenance. Natural stone, including Indian sandstone, limestone, and granite, remains a timeless choice that suits period properties and contemporary builds alike. Many of our clients combine materials, using porcelain for the main patio surface with granite step treads and raised planter edging to create distinct zones within the garden. We also build brick-bordered patios, curved seating walls, and integrated lighting features. Whatever your vision, we bring the technical knowledge and hands-on craftsmanship to deliver it properly.
Proper installation is what separates a patio that lasts five years from one that lasts fifty. In Dublin, this starts with understanding the ground beneath your garden. Much of the city sits on glacial boulder clay, from the drumlins of Firhouse through to the heavy tills of Blanchardstown. This subsoil drains poorly, and without a correctly engineered sub-base, drainage falls, and membrane protection, water pools beneath the patio surface and causes settlement, cracking, and frost heave during cold spells. We build every patio on a compacted stone sub-base with geotextile separation, calculated falls of at least 1:60 toward garden beds or aco drainage channels, and a rigid concrete foundation where porcelain is being laid. It is this invisible groundwork that determines whether your patio still looks perfect in 2040.
Dublin gardens come with their own set of considerations that a specialist patio contractor understands intimately. Rear access can be tight in terraced streets through Drumcondra and Phibsborough. Mature trees in established suburbs like Dundrum and Castleknock create root networks that must be managed carefully during excavation. North-facing gardens in areas like Clontarf benefit from lighter-coloured paving that maximises reflected light. South-facing plots in Templeogue and Knocklyon can support full outdoor living setups with dining zones, fire pit areas, and evening lighting. Paul assesses all of these factors during the initial consultation, ensuring your patio design works with your property rather than against it.

Why Choose Delaney as Your Patio Contractor in Dublin.
Premium Patio Materials
We work exclusively with top-tier porcelain, natural stone, and granite sourced from trusted European suppliers. No budget imports that crack after one winter. Paul brings physical samples to every consultation so you can see and feel the materials in your own garden before committing. Every tile, slab, and step tread is selected for durability in the Irish climate.
Complete Garden Transformation
A patio is just one element of your outdoor space. We handle every aspect of the project, from demolishing the old surface and re-grading levels, to building granite steps, raised planter walls, lawn edging, and drainage solutions. You deal with one contractor from start to finish, with no need to coordinate separate landscapers, drainage specialists, or groundworkers.
Expert Drainage Solutions
Dublin's heavy rainfall and clay-based subsoil make drainage the most critical factor in any patio build. We engineer every installation with laser-levelled falls, geotextile membranes, compacted stone sub-bases, and integrated aco channels where needed. Water moves away from your home and never pools on the patio surface, protecting both the paving and your property foundations.
Design Consultation Included
Every project begins with a free, no-obligation visit from Paul Delaney. He will measure your space, assess ground conditions, discuss material options, and present ideas tailored to your garden layout and budget. You receive a fully itemised written quote covering every element of the build. No vague estimates, no hidden charges, no surprises on completion day.
How We Build Your Patio.
Garden Survey & Design
Paul visits your Dublin property to survey the garden, measure the space, and assess access, ground conditions, and existing drainage. We discuss your ideas, walk through material options with physical samples, and agree on a layout that suits your property and lifestyle. You receive a detailed written quote covering all materials, groundwork, drainage, and labour before any work begins.
Excavation & Drainage
We excavate the full patio area to a minimum depth of 200mm, removing old surfaces, topsoil, roots, and any unsuitable material. On Dublin's heavy clay subsoil, we install a geotextile membrane to prevent clay migrating into the sub-base. Drainage falls are set at this stage using laser levels, and positions for aco channels or soakaway connections are prepared. All spoil is removed from site in our own skips.
Sub-Base Preparation
A compacted layer of MOT Type 1 crushed stone is laid to a minimum depth of 100mm, providing a stable, free-draining foundation. This is compacted in stages using a vibrating plate to achieve maximum density. For porcelain installations, we then pour a reinforced concrete base slab on top, typically 100mm of C25 concrete, creating the rigid foundation that porcelain adhesive requires. For natural stone, a cement-bound screed bed is prepared at the correct falls.
Patio Installation
Each slab or tile is laid with precision, using calibrated spacers and a levelling system to ensure perfectly uniform joints and a consistent surface plane. Porcelain tiles are back-primed with specialist slurry and set into flexible adhesive. Natural stone slabs are laid on a full mortar bed with consistent joint widths. Steps, edging, and border features are built at this stage. Diamond-blade cutting handles every edge, curve, and manhole surround with clean, chip-free results.
Grouting & Finishing
After a 24-hour curing period, we apply flexible exterior grout colour-matched to your chosen paving. All joints are filled evenly, excess grout is cleaned away, and the entire surface is washed down. Drainage channels are connected and tested. Any surrounding landscaping, including lawn edges, planter beds, and topsoil reinstatement, is completed. Paul walks through the finished patio with you to ensure everything meets your expectations before the job is signed off.
