Tar & Chip Driveways in Kildare

Tar and chip is one of the most enduring driveway finishes in rural Ireland, and it remains a strong specification choice for the right property in Kildare. The technique is genuinely traditional, a hot tarmac base is laid in the usual way, then a layer of washed natural stone chippings is rolled into the hot surface while the tarmac is still pliable, bonding the chippings into the top layer. The result is a driveway with tarmac's structural durability and drainage behaviour, but a textured, natural-stone-look surface rather than a plain dark finish.

For Kildare properties, tar and chip hits a particular sweet spot. It is perfect for country houses, farm entrances, period cottages, estate approaches and larger rural drives where the aesthetic calls for something more textured and informal than plain tarmac, but where gravel's migration and maintenance concerns rule it out. It is also significantly cheaper than resin bound on a like-for-like area basis, which matters on the longer drives (50-200 metres) common on rural Kildare properties. And it handles tractor, horse-box and trailer use with the same durability as a standard tarmac drive.

The chip colour choice is what lets you tune the finish to your property. Warm honey-gold chips pair beautifully with cream-rendered country homes and older stone cottages. Silver-grey granite chippings suit period houses with granite quoining and stone walls common across the Curragh, Clane and Monasterevin area. Red-brown chip ranges work on properties with red-brick frontages. Darker charcoal chips modernise the traditional tar and chip finish for newer builds. We bring real sample boards to every site survey so you can see each chip colour against your house in daylight.

Our tar and chip builds across Kildare follow the same rigorous sub-base standard as our tarmac work. 150-200mm of compacted crushed stone hardcore (deeper on soft or wet Kildare sites), concrete or kerbstone edge restraint around the perimeter, and a proper hot SMA tarmac base laid with a paver and roller. The chip layer is rolled into the tarmac while it is still pliable, ensuring mechanical bond rather than just surface contact. A second rolling pass after cooling locks everything in. Done right, a tar and chip drive runs 15-20 years before any resurfacing is needed.

One thing worth flagging, tar and chip has a slightly longer bedding-in period than plain tarmac, during which loose chippings naturally work up to the surface as the driveway is driven on. For the first few weeks we recommend sweeping loose chip off into planted beds or removing it, and avoiding heavy turning on the same spot. After 4-6 weeks the surface is fully settled and the chip is mechanically locked in permanently.

Why Choose Us

Why Kildare Homeowners Choose Delaney Tar & Chip

Texture of Stone, Durability of Tarmac

Tar and chip combines the best of both. Under the chip surface is a proper tarmac base that delivers tarmac's drainage, structural performance and frost resistance. On top is a natural stone texture that looks organic, traditional and right for rural properties. You do not have to choose between rural character and urban reliability.

Mid-Range Price, Country Character

Tar and chip sits between tarmac and resin bound on price, cheaper than resin per square metre, more visually distinctive than plain tarmac. For larger rural Kildare drives it is often the best value finish when you want something more than plain tarmac. Particularly strong on longer drives over 80-100 square metres.

Real Stone Chip Range

Honey gold, silver granite, red brown, charcoal, all sourced from Irish and UK quarries, all washed and graded properly. We bring sample boards to every site survey so you see the real chip colour in daylight against your house, not from a photo on a brochure.

Built on a Full Tarmac Sub-Base

Some contractors lay tar and chip on thin sub-bases assuming the "rural" style means less rigour is needed, that is exactly how you get sunken, cracked drives within 5 years. Our tar and chip builds get the full tarmac sub-base spec, 150-200mm compacted hardcore, deeper on soft ground, proper edge restraint, machine-laid tarmac base.

Our Process

How We Build Your Tar & Chip Driveway

01

Free Site Survey

We visit your Kildare property to measure the area, assess the existing surface, check drainage falls and inspect the ground. Chip colour samples brought to site to see against your house in daylight. Detailed written quote within 48 hours with no obligation.

02

Excavation & Sub-Base

Strip the existing surface and excavate to 150-200mm on standard ground (deeper on soft or wet Kildare sites). Dispose of all spoil responsibly. Lay compacted crushed stone hardcore in layers using a vibrating roller. Same structural foundation as a standard tarmac build.

03

Edge Restraint

Install the edge restraint course, concrete haunching, kerbstones or granite setts depending on the property style. The edge stops tarmac and chip edge wear over time and gives the finished driveway a clean perimeter line.

04

Tarmac Base & Chip Rolling

Machine-lay hot SMA tarmac as the base. While the tarmac is still hot and pliable, spread the washed stone chip layer evenly across the surface and roll it in with a heavy pneumatic or steel roller. The heat and pressure bond the chip mechanically into the tarmac top surface.

05

Second Roll, Handover & Bedding-In

After the tarmac cools, a second roller pass locks the chip in fully. We walk you through the finished driveway, explain the 4-6 week bedding-in period (sweep loose surface chip, avoid heavy turning), and provide long-term care guidance. Full life is 15-20 years before any resurfacing consideration.
