Gravel Driveways in Kildare

Gravel is the original driveway material for rural Ireland, and it is still the right answer for a significant share of Kildare properties. Country cottages, period homes, longer farm and estate approaches, and properties where the overall aesthetic calls for a natural, non-urban finish, gravel does a job that tarmac and block paving simply cannot match. It also sits at the most affordable price point of any driveway surface, which matters when the area to cover is large.

The problem with gravel driveways, and the reason they get a mixed reputation, is that most of them are laid badly. Loose gravel dumped onto flat ground with no sub-base, no weed membrane, no edge restraint, and no thought about the grade of stone actually being used. Within a year you have weeds pushing through, gravel migrating onto the lawn and the road, bare patches wearing down to mud, and a driveway that looks worse than the one it replaced. We do not build gravel driveways that way.

Every Delaney gravel driveway in Kildare starts with a proper 150-200mm compacted hardcore sub-base (the same foundation we lay for tarmac), followed by a heavy-duty geotextile weed membrane, a rigid edge restraint around the perimeter (either concrete kerb, stone edging, timber riser or steel edging depending on the property style), and finally a 40-50mm layer of properly washed and graded decorative gravel. The membrane stops weeds, the edge stops migration, and the gravel grade is chosen so it locks together under vehicle load rather than scattering.

Across Kildare we work with a range of gravel types. Golden pea gravel for warm, traditional country cottage looks. Silver-grey granite chippings for modern and period stone house pairings. Cream limestone for classic estate approaches. Red-brown mixes for houses with red-brick frontages. All sourced from Irish quarries, all properly washed and screened. On longer drives, common on rural Kildare sites, we can also install resin-bonded gravel as a hybrid option where the top layer of gravel is bonded to a tarmac base for zero migration at significantly lower cost than full resin bound.

Gravel also fits naturally into Kildare County Council's SuDS framework for front garden conversions. The gravel surface is permeable by definition, which means rainwater drains straight through to the sub-base and into the ground rather than running off to the road. For any front garden conversion above 5 square metres this meets the council drainage compliance requirement without needing a separate soakaway engineered into the build.

Why Choose Us

Why Kildare Homeowners Choose Delaney Gravel

Proper Sub-Base + Membrane + Edging

A gravel driveway lives or dies on three things, the sub-base, the weed membrane, and the edge restraint. We build all three to full tarmac-grade spec. That is the single biggest difference between a gravel drive that stays tight for 20 years and one that turns into a weedy, migrating mess within 18 months.

Quality Washed & Graded Gravel

We source properly washed and screened gravel from Irish quarries, never the unwashed loose chippings that migrate immediately and track mud into the house. Grade is chosen to lock together under vehicle load rather than scatter. Full sample range available at the site survey so you can see the finish in daylight against your house.

Country Character, Urban Reliability

Gravel gives a genuinely rural, traditional finish that tarmac and block paving cannot replicate. Birdsong crunch, soft edges into landscaping, the look of a proper country driveway. Done right with the backing spec above, it performs as reliably as any other surface, none of the common gravel-driveway failures.

SuDS-Compliant by Default

Gravel is permeable as standard, which means it meets Kildare County Council surface water rules for front garden conversions above 5 square metres without needing separate soakaway engineering. Often the cleanest way to comply with planning requirements on period or rural Kildare properties.

Our Process

How We Build Your Gravel Driveway

01

Free Site Survey

We visit your Kildare property to measure the area, assess ground conditions, check access for larger loads of stone, and discuss gravel type, edging and membrane spec. Samples brought to site. Detailed written quote within 48 hours.

02

Excavation & Sub-Base

Strip any existing surface or vegetation, excavate to 150-200mm, dispose of all spoil, and lay compacted crushed stone hardcore in layers with a vibrating roller. On very soft or wet rural Kildare ground we go deeper. This foundation is what carries the vehicle load.

03

Weed Membrane & Edge Restraint

Lay heavy-duty geotextile weed membrane across the prepared sub-base with generous overlaps. Install edge restraint around the perimeter, concrete kerb, stone edging, timber riser or steel edging depending on the property style. The restraint is what stops gravel migrating onto the lawn or the road.

04

Gravel Layer

Spread 40-50mm of washed and graded gravel evenly across the prepared base and membrane. Raked smooth to consistent depth. Proper gravel depth is critical, too thin and it fails to lock together under load, too deep and it becomes soft underfoot.

05

Handover & Care Guidance

We walk you through the finished driveway, explain the 2-4 week bedding-in period during which the gravel settles and compacts naturally, and provide care guidance, occasional raking to even out high-traffic areas, top-up schedule (typically every 5-7 years), and how to spot the very early signs of edge or membrane wear if it ever occurs.
