Porcelain Side Passage Transformation

The side passage is the part of a house that gets left until last, and it is usually where water collects and moss takes hold. This one was a rough gravel run down the side of the house that held water and tracked stone to the back door. It was rebuilt as a clean grey porcelain side return with a channel drain. The before and after tells the story.

The result

Why porcelain in a side return

A side return is a narrow, shaded, damp corner, which is exactly where a porous surface goes green. Porcelain is dense and non-porous, so it does not soak up water or grow moss the way gravel and older paving do. It stays clean with a brush and water, holds its colour out of the sun, and gives a narrow passage a tidy, finished surface that is easy to walk and wheel a bin down.

The channel drain

The detail that makes it work is the channel drain set along the base of the wall. A side passage funnels rain off the roof and the walls into a narrow space, so the water has to go somewhere. The channel drain runs the length of the return and carries surface water away cleanly, which is what stops the passage puddling and keeps the porcelain dry underfoot.

Why the base matters

A porcelain surface is only as good as what sits under it. The porcelain is bedded on a solid, well-drained base with the drainage built in, not laid over the old ground, because that is what stops tiles rocking or lifting and stops the water coming back.
