It uses the same sub-base but finishes with a sprayed binder and rolled stone chippings, which gives a more textured, rustic surface at a lower rate over large areas. It suits a rural setting where a smooth suburban finish would look out of place. What a proper tarmacadam spec looks like

A Delaney tarmacadam driveway is built in layers. Over the compacted sub-base goes a binder course of coarser tarmacadam for strength, then a dense SMA, or stone mastic asphalt, wearing course as the finished surface. Both layers are machine-laid by paver and rolled while still hot, never hand-laid, which is what gives the tight, even finish and lets the surface shrug off frost, oil and turning wear.
