Wicklow's Tar & Chip Driveway Specialists
Tar and chip is one of the most under-rated driveway finishes available, and it suits Wicklow rural and mountain-edge properties particularly well. The look is a textured natural stone surface, golden, mocha or grey depending on aggregate choice, that sits on a tarmacadam base. Visually it reads as gravel without the migration problems, and it has the structural backbone of tarmac underneath. For Wicklow country properties and mountain-edge cottages it is genuinely the right call.
The build is a two-stage process. First we lay a properly built tarmacadam base course (150mm sub-base + 40-50mm tarmac binder course) just like a standard tarmac drive. Then while the binder course is still warm we spread a hot bitumen emulsion across the surface and immediately roll natural stone aggregate (typically 6-10mm) into it. The roller embeds the aggregate into the bitumen, and once cured the result is a textured natural-stone surface bonded permanently to the tarmac base.
For Wicklow we typically specify warm gold and mocha aggregates that complement granite stonework on character properties around Roundwood, Aughrim, Avoca and the south Wicklow river valleys. Cooler grey chip suits more contemporary builds. Aggregate samples brought to the site survey for direct matching to existing landscape.
Tar and chip is particularly strong on rural mountain-edge approaches over 80 square metres because the per-square-metre cost is lower than block paving or resin while still delivering a textured natural-stone finish. For Wicklow Mountain villages around Enniskerry, Roundwood and Glencree, the textured surface also gives slightly better grip on sloping drives than smooth tarmac.

Underneath the natural-stone aggregate is a properly built tarmacadam base. Structural durability of tarmac with the visual character of gravel.
How We Build Your Wicklow Tar & Chip Driveway
Free Site Survey
We visit your Wicklow property to measure, assess existing surface and check ground conditions. Mountain-edge sloping sites get adjusted base spec documented at this stage.
Aggregate Selection
Sample boards brought to the survey. Warm gold and mocha for character properties, cooler grey for contemporary builds. 6-10mm grading is the standard.
Excavation & Base Course
Strip existing surface, excavate to required depth, lay compacted hardcore sub-base then 40-50mm machine-laid tarmac binder course. Edge restraint installed at this stage.
Bitumen & Aggregate
While the binder course is still warm we spread hot bitumen emulsion across the surface and immediately roll natural stone aggregate into it. The roller embeds aggregate into the bitumen, bonding it permanently.
Handover & Care Guidance
Cure window of 24-48 hours before vehicle use. Some loose aggregate will scatter in the first 4-6 weeks (this is normal, just sweep it back), then the surface settles. Maintenance is essentially zero from there.
