Wicklow's Gravel Driveway Specialists
Gravel is the right surface for rural and country Wicklow drives, but only when it is built properly. The gravel drives most people complain about, the ones that turn into mud in winter, scatter onto the road, develop ruts, get weeds growing through, are all built without a proper sub-base, no geotextile separation, no edge restraint and the wrong aggregate. We do not build them that way.
Every Delaney gravel driveway across Wicklow gets the proper spec: 200mm minimum compacted crushed-stone sub-base on standard ground (300mm on peat-edge or soft ground), woven geotextile membrane laid between the sub-base and the gravel wear course to prevent migration into the base, proper edge restraint in concrete kerb or timber, and a 50-75mm wear course of quality washed gravel in 14-20mm grading. That spec is what makes a gravel driveway last 15-20 years rather than 3.
For Wicklow we typically specify Cotswold buff, Wicklow granite chippings, golden quartz or natural pea gravel depending on property style. Period country properties suit warm Cotswold buff, contemporary builds suit cooler granite chippings, and traditional cottages suit washed golden quartz. Sample boards brought to the on-site survey for direct matching to existing landscape.
Gravel suits the longer rural approaches common across south and west Wicklow particularly well. Drives over 80-100 square metres are significantly cheaper to lay in gravel than in tarmac or block paving, while still delivering a tidy and well-built finish if the sub-base is right. For mountain-edge properties around Enniskerry, Roundwood, Glencree and Blessington, gravel handles slopes well when edge restraint and aggregate grading are correct. We do not recommend gravel within 1km of the coast as wind can scatter the surface aggregate.

Why Wicklow Homeowners Choose Delaney Gravel
Proper Deep Sub-Base
200mm minimum compacted crushed stone on standard Wicklow ground, 300mm on peat-edge or soft sites. The sub-base is what determines whether the drive lasts 20 years or 3. We never short-change it.
Geotextile Membrane Standard
Woven geotextile membrane laid between the sub-base and the gravel wear course prevents the gravel migrating down into the base over time. This is the single biggest reason cheap gravel drives fail within 5 years, and it is included on every Delaney gravel install.
Proper Edge Restraint
Concrete kerb edging, timber edging or kerbstone restraint depending on property style. Edge restraint stops the gravel scattering onto lawns, roads and footpaths. Without it, every gravel drive ends up half-empty and rutted within a few years.
Quality Washed Aggregate
Cotswold buff, Wicklow granite, golden quartz or pea gravel sourced from Irish-based premium suppliers in 14-20mm grading. Properly washed aggregate stays clean and looks right. Cheap pit-run gravel turns muddy and weedy fast.
How We Build Your Wicklow Gravel Driveway
Free Site Survey
We visit your Wicklow property to measure, assess existing surface, check ground type. Peat-edge and soft Wicklow ground sites get adjusted sub-base depth documented at this stage. Detailed quote within 48 hours.
Excavation & Sub-Base
Strip existing surface and excavate to 200mm on standard ground, 300mm on peat-edge or soft sites. Spoil removed and disposed of responsibly. Compacted crushed stone hardcore in layers using vibrating roller.
Geotextile Membrane
Woven geotextile membrane laid across the entire sub-base before the wear course. Membrane prevents gravel migrating down into the sub-base over time, which is the biggest cause of failure on cheap gravel installs.
Edge Restraint & Wear Course
Concrete kerb edging, timber or kerbstone restraint installed around the perimeter. 50-75mm wear course of quality washed gravel in 14-20mm grading spread evenly across the membrane.
Handover & Care Guidance
We walk you through the finished driveway. Annual rake to redistribute, occasional top-up of wear course every 3-5 years depending on traffic. Far less maintenance than people assume when the drive is built properly.
